The Irish Army had been established in the aftermath of the Great War, when the Irish Republic had first gained independence. Its first major action was in 1920 against British-backed Protestant rebel forces in the northeastern counties. American and German naval assistance helped crush the rebellion in Belfast at this time. During the Second Great War, the Army was defeated by the much larger British Army when they invaded in mid 1941, and the Republic was occupied.
