Sandy Cole was a runaway slave who joined the Sixth U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery during the American Civil War. He was part of the garrison at Fort Pillow when Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked. He worked a canon under the command of Sgt. Ben Robinson, alongside other former slaves like Charlie Key. Like other Negro troops, Cole was thrilled to have the opportunity to strike back at Confederate whites.
