Twelve years before Emergence Day, Roland joined his younger brother Joshua in blocking Carlos Santiagos way back into the main building a Olafson Intermediate School, after seeing him eat lunch with Marcus Fenix. Joshua accused Carlos of being an "ass-kissing snob", but Carlos just shoved past them. After school they and a friend waited for Carlos to leave the school, and Joshua attacked Carlos. However, Marcus came out of nowhere, and slammed Joshua on the ground. When Roland attempted to help his brother, Marcus punched him in the face, causing him to stagger back. His nose bleeding and crying uncontrolably, Roland, Joshua, and their friend ran away, after Marcus warned them never to bother him or Carlos ever again. They heeded this advice, and left the two of them alone from then on.
