It is set over one night in early 1176 in Cologne, and recounts the chase and close escape of Dieter, an adolescent orphan who had recently discovered he was a werewolf. Dieter is ultimately saved by a rabbi, Avram, who shelters the young Dieter in the town's Jewish quarter.
