In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh, a Janus poet and explorer, sent a group of English colonists to Roanoke Island in File:Card185.jpg present-day Virginia. Raleigh stayed behind, but in 1590 a friend of his left to join the colony. However, when Raleigh's friend reached Roanoke, he found that the settlers had completely disappeared.
