Fyodor was part of the Soviet military garrison at Bulola, Afghanistan. He was injured when the Mujahideen attacked, and taken back behind the lines, and so, he escaped the fate of his comrades who were killed by the dragon that had slumbered for centuries in the mountains outside the town. Fyodor's hearing was acute.
