Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Irish campaigned for Home Rule, which was eventually granted in 1920 at the end of the First World War in the form of an elected Parliament (called the Oireachtas) and a First Minister (called the Taoiseach). Despite a Republican uprising in the 1920s and a period of ethno-nationalist conflict in the late 20th century, Southern Ireland has emerged as a prosperous and important part of the United Kingdom. Dr. Carolyn Garrett's mother was from Southern Ireland and her grandfather was killed during the Troubles. The sport of gaelic football originated here. (VEN: "Homesick")
