Some of the first geological thoughts were about the origin of the Earth. With a lack of knowledge and technology, ancient philosophers created mythical stories and proposed theories to explain how the Earth came to be. Early writing on mineralogy, especially on gemstones, comes from ancient Babylonia, the ancient Greco-Roman world, ancient and medieval China, and Sanskrit texts from ancient India and the ancient Islamic World.
