Frontier Space is the designation of the Universe outside of the main jurisdiction of the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe. While not outside their influence, these parts of the cosmos are not included in the 3600 Space Sectors patrolled by the main force of the Corps. Green Lanterns in these areas of space are not given the basic training of the main Corps, instead the ring gives them instructions on their new role as protectors.
