The IMS had Sir Ronald Ross, a Nobel Prize winner, among its notable ranks. Another notable figure was Sir Benjamin Franklin, later honorary physician to three British monarchs. Also a member of the IMS was Henry Vandyke Carter, most notable for his illustrations in the anatomy textbook Gray's Anatomy. The IMS was one of the routes to becoming a Political officer of the Indian Political Department
