Boeing, Inc. is one of the world's largest corporations and the largest producer of commercial and military airliners in the United States. Headquartered in Tacoma, Washington, the company owns two of the world's largest factory complexes where it assembles its planes, one in East Olympia to the south, and another in Southlake to the north. While initially a financially struggling company, Boeing achieved national importance during the Pacific War, and the Tacoma area avoided major bombing or attacks by the Japanese for the majority of the campaign, leaving plane-building operations untouched. Postwar, Boeing assembled passenger craft in the burgeoning commercial air industry, cementing itself as an American monopoly on airline production.
