Captain Ponsford was an officer in the British Army during World War I. When the Third Doctor, Tobias Philby and Thomas were brought to British HQ, Ponsford did not believe the Doctor's report of a massive German artillery build-up and suspected him and his associates of being German spies. To prove themselves, the Doctor and a pilot went on a flight over German lines, narrowly escaping being shot down. Upon returning, the pilot confirmed the Doctor's story and the prisoners were released. (COMIC: The Amateur)
