Thomas was born in Stockton, California, the son of Catherine Schuler, a computer science professor and author, and Randy Thomas, a trial attorney, poet, and adventurer. He studied theater at both Arizona State University and the University of Southern California, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts at USC in 2005, and later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television.
