Let's face it. Paladins are supposed to be the badasses of the religious medieval world. They wield the power of the gods and direct it towards evildoers without a shred of hesitation, blowing away anyone and everyone that is evil, or that has a stark chance of becoming evil. Some paladins even preemptively wipe out entire heretic settlements in the name of justice, not even faltering as much as a hair's breadth in front of the evil they have sworn to destroy.
