Walter is the son of the family matriarch, Lena Younger. He lives in a poor Chicago neighborhood with his headstrong sister, Beneatha, his loyal wife Ruth, and his young son Travis. He and his family struggle with prejudice and poverty while trying to make a living. Walter starts out bearing the weight of these troubles on his shoulders until he learns to see what he's been missing.
