An ancient village in Hawaii contained a secret route to under the river beside it, through an underwater cavern. John Simms and his henchman found it and used the village as their base of operations in their pearl poaching business. Simms tried to scare the natives and tourists away by warning them that the village was the sacred ground of Mano Tiki Tia.
