The first title in the Mystery Dungeon series, made by Enix with the permission of Chunsoft, Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon, starred Torneko, a shopkeeper character from Dragon Quest IV. Chunsoft was also the developer of the first five games in the Dragon Quest series. The success of the Torneko title led to an entire series of games featuring characters from Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and Pokémon.
