Obann is described as a grizzled veteran and is one of the ten Elven Hunters that is hand picked by Jerle Shannara in their quest for the Black Elfstone. He makes it through all obstacles, being one of the four Elven Hunters to survive breaking through the Gnome lines in Baen Draw. Soon after he is selected to remain with the horses and hide them in the forest when the rest of the party sets off to find the Black Elfstone in the Kensrowe Mountains and the Breakline. He remains with the horses to keep them hidden from the Gnomes following the party.
