Gromm plays a major part in the Dark Brotherhood quest "Accidents Happen," where Baelin's death is required. He will patrol around the manor and turn hostile if he spots the Hero. If the Hero enters Baenlin's house prior to this quest and kills Gromm (or if they flee his attack, and he is killed by the guards), the bonus criteria for Accidents Happen cannot be met, as he will not be present.
