Henry Clay ran for president on the Whig ticket with Theodore Freylinghuysen in 1844 against his opponent Littleton Tazewell. While previous Whig opponents could not upstage Andrew Jackson's populist appeal there was significant resentment that had built up over the Mexican-American War still regarded by many Whigs as immoral. Henry Clay like his opponent supported taking the whole of the Oregon Territory. Still Henry Clay avoided condemning the war, which would've certainly lost the election. Clay won by a slim margin. Henry Clay sought reelection, but lost to Lewis Cass.
