A fanega was an old dry measure use to measure dry goods such as grain, etc. Also called the Spanish bushel, it varied from place to place, but, officially was approximately 12 imperial bushels or 55½ litres. Dry goods in the Hornblower stories were purchased from Oran in fanegas.
