Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, to blacksmith Ezekiel Lanceton and Josephine Pattersen, not much is known about his childhood. Lanceton moved to Denver to attend higher education and, after his uncle Noah had been promoted colonel, he joined the United States Army at the age of 21, along with his younger brother Grant.
