Istomin was given command of the 48th Mobile Artillery Company late in the war, when mounting casualties had forced most artillery units to deploy with a mix of modern and older, less advanced systems. A gifted technician, Istomin made modifications to his vehicles' sensors that gave them exceptional detection range, and upgraded their ballistic computers to give them a level of accuracy equal to or better than more advanced units.
