The Maple Leaf Rag was composed in 1899 by Scott Joplin. It was named for a club in Sedalia, Missouri, that lasted only about a year in itself. The Maple Leaf soon became ragtime's biggest hit, starting a ragtime craze across the country. This, in turn, influenced many more genres, such as jazz.[1]
