Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brasil has a coastline of 7,491 km (4,655 mi). The country borders all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chile and occupies almost 50 percent of the South American continent. Its Amazon River basin includes an enormous tropical forest home to diverse wildlife, a variety of ecological systems, and numerous protected habitats. This unique environment makes Brasil one of many megadiverse countries.
