Sokka, born and raised as a warrior in the Southern Water Tribe, was on a fishing trip with his younger sister Katara when they discovered Avatar Aang frozen in an iceberg. After learning that he was the Avatar, the three formed a group and traveled to the North Pole where Aang and Katara could learn waterbending.
