The history of the Matrix universe really begins in the 21st century. As human technology advanced, humanity's so-called civil societies soon fell victim to vanity and corruption. Then scientists perfected artificial intelligence and built machines in humanoid form. The machines were employed in a variety of positions ranging from domestic servants to unskilled laborers on massive construction projects. It was not long before seeds of dissent took root. Though loyal, the machines earned no respect from humans.
