Rachel Jackson (1767-1828) was the wife of President of the United States Andrew Jackson. Rachel had been married before she met the future president, and believed that her previous husband had divorced her when she married Andrew. However, the divorce had not been completed. Thus, the first years of the Jackson marriage were invalid. The divorce was complete in 1794. The marriage issue arose in the presidential election of 1828, when supporters of John Quincy Adams leveled charges of bigamy at Rachel. Although Jackson ultimately won, Rachel died months before her husband was sworn in.
