The 1998 Farm Aid on CMT 300 was a Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup) event held at New Hampshire International Speedway on August 30, 1998. After Mark Martin led the most laps and took four tires on the final pit stop, it appeared he could win the event. But Jeff Gordon took two tires and began to pull away from the competition. With Gordon's victory, Jack Roush, Martin's owner, was furious. He claimed Gordon's crew chief, Ray Evernham had to be using a chemical to soften the tire. NASCAR then launched a two-week investigation that later became known as Tiregate. Gordon, in the meantime, used the win to steady a 67-point championship lead on Martin. Stats
