Following World War 2, an Allied Nations resolution severed all ties between Algeria and France and gave the former mandate status under USA guidance. The USA government immediately set about reorganising Algeria giving equal rights to all. This was resisted by the French descendants Pieds-Noirs and the assimilated natives Harkis. In the following years, both of these groups preferred to emigrate en masse to France instead of staying. The rest of the population was at first enthusiastic due to the new state of affairs but some quickly demanded even more autonomy that led to armed insurrections.
