Central Lancashire was a designated New Town in 1970. It was the last area to date to be named as a new town. The designated area covers the towns of Preston, Leyland in South Ribble and Chorley. The new town area covered 35,255 acres (142 km²), and covered the entirety of the county borough of Preston, and parts of Chorley, Fulwood, Leyland and Walton-le-Dale, and also parts of Chorley Rural District and Preston Rural District. The British Office for National Statistics gives a figure for the 'Preston urban area', covering Preston, Leyland, Chorley, Euxton and Wymott, of 264,601.
