Climbing ever-higher into the heavens, the golden orb sent its rays westward, washing the land with light. Across the Haddon Mirk and Tear, over the plazas of Far Madding, through the stained glass windows of the White Tower, and ever onward the sunlight made its relentless way in thwarting the shadows of the night. In the farms of Emond's Field wives woke their husbands to greet a new day, and in Amadicia the sunlight blazed across the golden burst proclaiming the Fortress of Light. Ever onwards the sunlight rushed towards the sea, its rays piercing the gloom around Windbiter's Finger and across the seas to islands where people all rose to begin a new day. It was not the beginning, but it was a beginning. Standing along the shoreline and facing the Sea of Storms, Bayle Domon looked at the changing tide and grunted with satisfaction. A boat was coming in fast, rounding the promontory with too much wind. The vessel was clearly marked for Tear, and probably carried fine goods for trade. Bayle knew it would never reach its intended port. "He do be a fool of a captain," he said out loud. "There do be a meal for the sharks on the way." Even as he uttered the words a huge wave swelled from seemingly nowhere and it tossed the vessel from side to side, like a cork in a tidal wave, helpless to stay upright. The boat listed, and with a groan of protest and a scream of snapping timbers, the boat was on its side and impaled upon the reef below. "All hands!" Domon yelled to his men. "We do be having a fine morning before us!" He started to make his way down the hidden paths only a man of sea and shore would know, off to see what could be scavenged from the wreck.
