Established as a result of the 1870 Education Act (along with many other School Boards) and responsible in effect for educating the working classes. Wound up in 1904 as a result of the 1902 Cockerton Judgment, its functions being transferred to the London County Council. Responsible for the construction of many schools, of which a number still survive (some still as schools - though names may have changed).
