  • Digital IN, The Digital IN, or The Digital Influence Network was founded by J. G. Sandom as a service to authors. Digital IN helps authors publicize books by selling them Amazon reviews for $12 each or at the discounted price of $11 in quantity. Originally the cost was $10 per review. The reviews are for Kindle e-book editions. Digital IN guarantees that all the reviews will be 5-star or else the reviewer won't get paid. Digital IN also works with the author to lower the price of the book to $0.99 so that the reviews will appear with an Amazon Verified Purchase tag. The purchase price of the book is included in the $12 fee. This also increases the sales ranking of the book on Amazon. The Digital IN guarantees anonymity to authors and reviewers. Only ten reviews are posted each week to avoid detection by Amazon, according to The Digital IN's website. The Digital IN paid reviews must be 5 lines each or longer. The same reviewers often review many of the titles for which The Digital IN is selling reviews. Many of the paid reviewers use their real names and photographs on their Amazon profile pages. They are paid $5 for each review. Although paid reviews are a violation of Amazon's customer review guidelines, Sandom states on The Digital IN website that he doesn't believe that it is unethical. However, the Federal Trade Commission disclosure rules are not addressed. Those rules state that paid endorsers, reviewers, or bloggers must reveal that they have been paid even if it is only with a review copy. Some of the books with Digital IN paid reviews have an odd distribution of 5 star reviews from the paid reviewers vs. the 1 and 2 star reviews from genuine readers who saw the paid 5 star reviews and thought that a book was of higher quality than it was in reality.
