Dr Warren Martyn was an archaeologist, an explorer and a friend of Lavinia Smith. In 1983, his assistant, Dexter Townsend, and he led an Egyptian dig following new satellite photography of the deserts. The dig was cursed by funding difficulties, on-site deaths and the theft of items. This led to most of his financial backers withdrawing funding. Lavinia sent her niece Sarah Jane Smith (accompanied by K9) to the digs for the story. Dr Martyn found an underground city of Silurians and Sea Devils.
