abstract
  • Jane Decker was a human female who lived during the 23rd century. She was the wife of Starfleet Commodore Matthew Decker, and the mother of Captain Willard Decker. (The novel Ex Machina gives her name as Joan Decker.) While Matt Decker spent years in space, Jane lived on Earth and was somewhat a follower of the New Human movement, seeking community with others and exploring Human nature through joined living spaces and communes. Will, while learning his father's ideals, also grew up in understanding of the New Human openness, which Ilia felt encouraged him to seek unity with her while he was a young officer assigned to Delta. This type of exuberance to new experiences of consciousness probably also played a role in Jane's son seeking union with V'Ger. (TOS novelization: The Motion Picture) Captain James T. Kirk informed her of her husband's death following combat with the Planet Killer. When her son Willard joined with V'Ger, Kirk also delivered the news of her son's leaving to Jane Decker. A few weeks later, Kirk contacted Decker again, and asked her more about her son, learning much more about his former first officer in the process. She sent Kirk a collection of her son's writings. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)
