American composer Ron Nelson originally composed this work for orchestra but transcribed it for band after he realized that it was difficult to get a new orchestral work performed, while band directors were anxious for new pieces. This overture alternates between two contrasting moods that represent the power and serenity of the Savannah River, which forms most of the border between South Carolina and Georgia.
