| - The English Electric Lightning was developed by the RAF after the Second World War, where Britain was wary of the threat from the Soviet Union. This was designed to chase down enemy aircraft, rather than having good fighting abilities. In the 1950’s, Britain had greater need to produce a defence interceptor due to hostilities in places such as Korea and therefore the first prototype, Lightning F1 was produced in 1954. There were several more prototypes by 1962, before the Lightning F3 came into service. In comparison to other aircraft at that time, the Lightning was good in performance. For example a MiG 21 could climb 36, 000 ft per minute, while the Lightning could climb 50, 000 ft in a minute. The Lightning was also quick and could reach Mach 2.3, which is the equivalent to 1500mph. Throughout their service in the Cold War era, the Lightnings are only credited with one kill. The Lightning at Score Group plc’s Wellbank facility still has the RAF identification code of XR749 and probably the most famous of all the Lightning’s built. In 1984, the XR749 was used in a zoom climb test where it took off and was then sent into a rapid climb, ending at 88, 000 ft, over 20, 000ft higher than the RAF had previously admitted the Lightning could climb. At 88, 000 ft the sky is dark and the plane would almost have been entering space. The retirement of the XR749 started when it was withdrawn from service in 1995 and went on to become the gate guard at Teeside airport. In 2004, Score Group plc acquired XR749 and brought the plane to its Glen Test Facility where it was reassembled.
