The year 31 before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) was a span of time during the declining days of the Galactic Republic. In 31 BBY, Shmi Skywalker met and married Cliegg Lars, a moisture farmer who lived on the outskirts of Anchorhead on Tatooine. The marriage gave Annikin Skywalker a stepfather in Cliegg, as well as a stepbrother in Cliegg's son, Owen Lars. Skywalker and his mother moved to the Lars moisture farm where they too became moisture farmers, although they were sharecroppers because the farm was owned by the crime lord Jabba the Hutt.
