  • Though they are small and can't fly, the swamp dragons are the only dragons anyone in Domhain Byd has seen in living memory. Adult size ranges from four feet in length to thirteen feet, growing larger with age. Their wings are too small for true flight, though are often used for flapping and cooling off the swamp dragon's body while it wallows in mud or water. They can also be used to allow the dragon to coast down from a tree after climbing it to watch for prey.

Adult size ranges from four feet in length to thirteen feet, growing larger with age. They can also be used to allow the dragon to coast down from a tree after climbing it to watch for prey. Rather than breathing fire, swamp dragons can produce a poisonous gas with glands in their throat. This gas destroys vegetation and can stun or even kill animals. This gas can be ignited, if a heat source is available. Unfortunately for the swamp dragons, the gas can be ignited while inside of them as well. A fire that is too close, stress, poor diet or simply being startled can cause a swamp dragon to explode. In captivity, they are often grotesquely bloated from stress. They have never been successfully bred while in captivity. Those who wish to keep swamp dragons must capture them as infants. Those that are not kept in captivity tend to be far more attractive due to the lack of stress. Their bodies are sleeker and they are much healthier. It's possible that the right care could keep them healthy, happy and breedable in captivity, but if anyone has discovered such methods they aren't widely know. Swamp dragons eat a diet of insects, fish, birds and any mammals they can fit in their mouths. Their lifespan in the wild is estimated to last thirty years. In captivity they typically live for five. Despite their gaseous natures, if they can be killed without harming their meat they are considered a delicacy. The meat is very delicate in taste and texture, but rich with fat.
