Stats can be increased directly by drinking potion of gain attributes, potion of apropriate stat (or carrot juice for Perception) or eating certain corpses. Another mechanic is stat training (or abuse in case of negative modifiers), which presumably has hidden value for each stat and is checked up on random periods. If check is passed, stat is increased. Whether check is passed or not, training value is believed to diminish; training should thus be applied as concentrated effort, since it does not accumulate through the long periods efficiently.

As of 1.2.0, most if not all forms of training respect stat potential (meaning they do not raise potential).
