The Pirates had wanted to keep him until the end of the season, but Reading were without a manager at the time and were not willing to commit him to a long term stay until an appointment had been made. Eventually the extension to the end of the season was agreed and Mikkel went on to play a total of 39 games for Rovers, all in League One, before returning to his parent club. He was selected for the Danish squad for the 2010 Toulon Tournament, where he reached the final and was named 'Goalkeeper of the Tournament'. Unfortunately for him the Ivory Coast took the trophy, thanks to a 3–2 victory. Andersen rejoined Rovers on a month long loan prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. Andersen was not expected to rejoin Rovers, despite public acknowledgement from manager Paul Trollope that he wanted to bring Mikkel back to the club. However, following a pre-season injury to Luke Daniels, forcing his return to West Bromwich Albion, the fan favourite made a comeback. His loan was extended for a further four months on August 31st, and he eventually left the club on 4 January 2011 to be replaced by the aforementioned Luke Daniels.
