Alan Mather was the cousin of Florrie Lindley, who accompanied her to a builders' dance in May 1963, where they bumped into Florrie's neighbours, Elsie Tanner and Len Fairclough. The character was played by Alan Downer who later wrote five episodes of the programme between 1979 and 1980.
