Route bouys were used throughout the Galactic Republic as part of the galaxy's trade routes. Placed at intervals in space close to the routes, they broadcast their coordinates and information about nearby systems on all frequencies, allowing ships that came across them to more easily keep track of their location. After most shipboard computers gained the ability to determine the information determined by bouys on their own around the 8th century BBY, they stopped being placed or maintained, but many of them survived into the days of the New Galactic Empire. A couple also became dislodged and ended up very far from the coordinates they broadcasted, much to the confusion of some parties that ran into them. The three person crew of the Living Force in 15 BBY was one such party.
