Hunter's debut came in 1965, and what a debut it was for the driver. Starting 10th at Maryville, Hunter completed all but nine laps in route to a remarkable 4th place effort. Hunter's next race came in 1966, when he returned to Maryville. However, Hunter struggled this go around. Just eight laps into the race, Hunter retired with overheating issues and finished 24th among twenty-six cars. Hunter's final three races came in 1967, when he finished a career-best 91st in points. Hunter struggled in his season opener, starting last (36th) and finishing 33rd at Bristol. But Hunter still had Maryville, qualifying on the pole for June event. After a 12th place finish in that race, Hunter followed that up with a career-best 3rd place run in the July Maryville race, just running one lap off the pace.
